Questions on Personal Hygiene

Clipping one's nails, combing hair and bathing in menstruation
Question:
I have heard that it is not allowed for the menstruating women to comb her hair, clip her nails or take a head bath. Is this correct?

Answer by Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saleh al-Uthaimeen (rahimahullah), 'It is incorrect, for it is allowed for the menstruating women to clip her nails, comb her hair and perform Ghusl (bath). For example, if she is in the state of Janabah from wet-dream while she is in the state of menstruation then she has to perform Ghusl from Janabah and (another example is that) if her husband fondles her without having sexual intercourse and she experiences wetness then she has to perform Ghusl from Janabah. So, this statement which has become famous among some women that she should not bathe, comb or trim her nails is baseless in the Sharee'ah according to my knowledge.' [Noor ala-Darb (29Jun 2004)]

The ruling on maintaining long clean nails
Question: What is the ruling on maintaining one's nails while one is sure that they are clean? Is clipping nails a Sunnah or Fardh (obligatory)?

Answer by Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saleh al-Uthaimeen (rahimahullah), 'Trimming or clipping one's nails is from the Sunan al-Fitrah that Allah has installed in the instincts of His creation and has made it a Sunnah in the Sharee'ah. Allah's Messenger (sallalalhu alaihi wa-sallam) has prescribed a time limit within which one should clip one's nails (at least once) and cut his mustache, shave his pubic hair and pluck one's armpits and not leave them for more than forty days. Similarly, do not leave the nails for more than forty days regardless of whether they are clean or dirty because the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (sallalalhu alaihi wa-sallam) and not clipping them is contradicting one's Fitrah with which every human being is created with. Moreover, if maintaining the length of the nails is in imitation of the disbelievers those who have changed their Fitrah from goodness (to evil) then such an act is Haraam for, Allah's Messenger said, 'Whosoever imitates a group is from them.' Reported by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad with a good isnad. …and if the doer leaves his nails for more than forty days out of his human desires then he has contradicted the Fitrah and violated the prescribed limitation of the Prophet (sallalalhu alaihi wa-sallam) for the Ummah.'
