As-Sunnah Vol. 2 Issue No. 4

Editorial: Two Important Topics Explained in this Issue

As-Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatallahi wa Barakatuhu

We most definitely are what we speak. A person's speech is the first window into his character, upbringing and beliefs. How many are those, whose good speech and eloquence lead them to success and respectability, and how many are those, whose vile speech leads them to failure and insignificance!!

Allah says, ‘He created man. He taught him eloquent speech.’ [Soorah ar-Rahman (55): 3-4]

Islam warrants that its adherents are those who weigh their words before they speak. Speak only that which is beneficial, refrain from speech that could potentially harm others and most importantly, be extremely careful and abstain from sayings which contradict the beliefs and teachings of the blessed Deen.

‘Words we say out of negligence,’ the feature article of this issue of
As-Sunnah, highlights words and phrases that one might utter out of carelessness, but their effect on a person’s faith is devastating because of the meaning they imply.

When it comes to matters of faith, there is no such thing as loose talk; rather, the believers should be distinguished by being cautious and appropriate in their speech. Being careless in one’s speech, especially in matters that have been clearly cautioned from, in the Book and the Sunnah, is a sign of weak faith, frail religious commitment and dangerous ignorance, which, at times, leads a person to great sins, and at others to disbelief, and Allah's refuge is sought from this.

Another important article, in this issue is on the meaning and manner of Salaat al-Istikharah, which is a Dua specifically to seek guidance from Allah – the Most High. The article explains the lofty and eloquent words of the Dua, in which are expressions by which a slave of Allah expresses his servitude and helplessness, and turns to Allah for guidance in his time of need. As such, this Dua is a great act of worship, and its words and implications are those that lead to the Pleasure of Allah.

Unfortunately, the great concept of Istikharah has been abused by some, who present al-Istikharah in a manner completely contrary to its true purpose. In this issue, we shall explain in details as to what Istikharah is and what it is not; and attempt with Allah Help to clarify some dangerous misconceptions and myths in this regard.

May Allah render our endeavors fruitful to us and the Ummah. Ameen!
