Manner of Salaat al-Istikharah

One may pray two Rak'ahs (units) of supererogatory prayer and make the specified Dua taught by our noble Prophet (sallallahu aliahi wa-sallam). Imam al-Bukharee mentions that Jabir (radhi allahu anhu) reported, 'the Prophet used to teach us al-Istikharah in all our affairs, like he would teach us a Soorah of the Qur'aan saying, 'If any of you is concerned about an affair, then let him pray two Rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayers after which he should supplicate,

And he mentions his need.' [Saheeh al-Bukharee (2/263)]

Shaikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (rahimahullah) said in al-Fatawa al-Kubra (vol.2, p.265) replying to a question concerning Dua al-Istikharah, whether it be recited during the Salaat (prayer) or after saying the salaam. He answered that it is permissible to recite Dua al-Istikharah before or after the salaam, whether you are praying Salaat al-Istikharah or another prayer. Reciting the Dua before the salaam is preferable, as the Prophet (sallallahu aliahi wa-sallam) used to recite a lot of Dua before the salaam, and the worshipper before saying the salaam is still in a state of prayer, so it is better to recite the du'aa' then.

Salaat al-Istikharah does not have any particular time or specific Soorah to be recited, however, there is nothing wrong if one strives to perform it in times during which Dua is more likely to be answered, since Salaat al-Istikharah is a supplication for seeking Allah's Guidance.
